When we think of food in film, we might conjure images of copious cakes, mischievous lobsters or 50 hard boiled eggs, but we probably struggle to remember what we heard. And yet, sound is much more than just a garnish. We’re dishing up a buffet of reasons as to why sound is arguably the most important ingredient when it comes to food onscreen. Not just a mechanism for making our mouths water, as in emotive, family-oriented films such as The Farewell and Brooklyn, sound design can also serve up a large helping of tension like in Inglorious Basterds. As we reassess some of the most memorable scenes in foodie cinema, and how the sensory experience has to reach beyond just the eyes, we’ll find it’s not just our taste buds that are tingling.
