Shimmering sea scales! This DIY no-sew MerCat purse is the purr-fect Summer craft!
SUPPLIES:
Mint colored felt
White and dark blue or black felt
Assorted felt scraps in green, teal, and purple
Fabric scissors
Penny (for tracing)
Pen or pencil
Tacky fabric glue
Brush and small bowl (for glue)
Crayons
Ribbon
DIRECTIONS
1. Cut a cat-shaped front face piece, eyes, heart-shaped nose, ear triangles, starfish, and a scalloped mermaid scale “hair” backing piece.
2. Make Mercat’s mermaid scales: trace pennies on the assorted green, teal, and purple felt. Cut enough circles to cover the backing piece and glue them on in overlapping rows, starting at the bottom. Once the glue dries, you can trim off the circles that extend off the backing piece, following the shape of the backing piece.
3. Glue on the mermaid hair, eyes, nose, ears, and starfish.
4. Flip the face over. Paint glue around the edges and all over the ears but not between the ears (which will be the bag’s opening). Brush 1 inch of glue onto each end of the ribbon and press them onto the back of the face. Lay the backing felt over this and press the edges and ears to adhere them together.
5. Flip it over and trim around the edges, cutting away the backing felt, being careful not to cut the ribbon. Use crayons to draw eyelashes, mouth and rosy cheeks.
