Maximilian Glick is a young Jewish boy in the 1950s from a small Manitoba community who has an overbearing family. His life is made more difficult when he falls in love with a Christian girl, whom he later competes with in a piano competition. Rabbi Teitelman, an orthodox Jew with an unorthodox, fun-loving approach to life, tries to help him with his problems.
