We are often asked, โWhat is the oldest woodcut in our print shop exhibit?โ The Lewis Winter Collection contains the oldest cuts at our museum, considering Winter was in business from 1888 to 1910. What about his predecessor though?
In the Lewis Winter Collection , there is a small woodcut of an advertisement for C.H. Holmes, who had a photo and wood engraving office at 627 J Street in Sacramento in the 1880s. He was hired to be the State Engraver in 1886 and eventually sold his business two years later to Lewis Winter.
In this video, Jared printed the oldest woodcut (that we know of) in our print shop exhibit.
