Did you know you can cut half lap joints using a miter saw? Many miter saws are equipped with a depth stop. On mine, I just flip out this little lever here, then adjust the depth using the thumb screw. Once I’ve got the depth dialed in, I’ll install a sacrificial fence at the back and clamp it down. It helps to first cut a kerf line that will serve as a visual reference. I can then drop in my board and line up my marking on the edge of the kerf line. I like to make the first cut, then use the mating piece to mark the opposite side of the joint. I’ll then line up the marking with the kerf and make the second cut. Then finish by cleaning out the waste in the middle with progressive passes. A little sanding and you’ll have a perfect lap joint.
