Adventures with Purpose (AWP) returns to the Sacramento River in **Episode 6**, intensifying the search for six missing people who vanished under mysterious circumstances.
Armed with advanced sonar technology and relentless determination, the team explores new stretches of the river, uncovering submerged vehicles and revisiting leads that could hold the answers families have been seeking for years.
Julie Margaret Vessigault
Julie disappeared on **January 23, 2024**, after leaving her mother’s house in Elk Grove, CA. Driving a tan 2005 Toyota Camry (GA plate SBJ4515), she was last seen heading west on Elk Grove Boulevard. Security footage captured her car, but where she went remains a mystery. Julie loved aviation and was known for her meticulous nature. Her family continues to search, desperate for answers about her fate.
John Atkins
John vanished in **October 1973 while driving his GMC Sprint. A hardworking salesman and dedicated father, he was last seen near the Freeport Bridge. His children, Scott and Marylin, have spent nearly 50 years searching for their father, hoping to uncover the truth behind his disappearance. The team continues to focus on areas south of the bridge, working on leads that suggest John may have veered into the water after suffering a medical emergency.
Norma Houghland and Sons, Thomas and Richard
On July 15, 1978, Norma and her two sons, Thomas and Richard, left their Sacramento home on a summer drive to escape the heat. Traveling in a gold or light blue 1965 Pontiac LeMans, they vanished without a trace. The lack of air conditioning in their home often prompted Norma to take drives, and it’s suspected that an accident along River Road may have caused their car to end up submerged.
Jose Guadalupe Cortez
Jose disappeared on April 4, 1992, after leaving a local bar in Stockton, CA, intoxicated. He was last seen in a red Toyota Celica, believed to have taken River Road. Jose’s case highlights the dangers of the waterways, where countless vehicles remain hidden beneath layers of silt and debris.
Uriel Cantu
Uriel went missing on November 26, 2006, en route to Washington State to pick up a paycheck. Driving an **unknown vehicle**, it’s suspected he avoided highways, traveling along River Road to escape detection. Uriel’s family continues to hold out hope for answers about his sudden disappearance.

The team begins Day 6 by diving into areas where sonar detected submerged vehicles during previous scans. Among the findings is a red Toyota Celica, potentially linked to Jose Guadalupe Cortez, and a station wagon that might be tied to Norma Houghland. Each vehicle represents a potential breakthrough—or another heartbreaking clue in a series of unsolved mysteries.
Sonar and down-imaging technology allow AWP to scan inaccessible river areas, including stretches with heavy currents, debris, and decades of accumulated silt. In total, the team has now identified over 20 vehicles during this search alone, pulling out eight of them to help clean up the environment and provide leads to local authorities.
“These families have waited far too long for answers,” said Jared Leisek — AWP Founder. “We owe it to them to keep searching, no matter how difficult it is.”
