While local issues were at the core of the Congress campaign and its historic win of 135 seats in the 224-member assembly, it was this man who gave the party an edge – 41-year-old consultant Sunil Kanugolu, who drove the campaign, swaying public opinion in favour of the Congress. With him was another backroom boy – All India Congress Committee (AICC) war room in-charge Sasikanth Senthil. Kanugolu — a former associate of the better-known poll strategist Prashant Kishor — works from Bengaluru. His father is Kannadiga while his mother is Telugu. He studied engineering as an undergraduate and went on to get two postgraduate degrees – MS in finance and an MBA. He worked with management consultancy firm McKinsey before returning to India to manage political parties’ campaigns.
