The fires in Los Angeles over the past week have killed at least 25 people, left nearly 30 others missing, and displaced thousands of residents. Over 12,000 buildings have been destroyed, marking this as potentially the most expensive wildfire disaster in US history. Strong Santa Ana winds, gusting up to 50 mph (80 kph), are exacerbating fire conditions and are expected to intensify. A red-flag warning is in effect, along with a rare “particularly dangerous situation” alert issued by the National Weather Service due to severe fire conditions. The Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth, and Hurst fires have burned approximately 63 square miles (163 square kilometres). The Palisades and Eaton fires, are far from contained, and officials have warned that it might take weeks, or longer, to fully extinguish them.
