Materials:
For the Candle Mold
• 1 Empty Potato Chip Can
• 50cm Candle Wick
• Wooden skewer stick
• Small Piece of Blu Tack Adhesive (or similar)
• Tape
• Thin sharp nail
• Hammer
For the Wax
• 300g Beeswax, Stearin or Paraffin Wax
• 2 Drops Yellow Candle Dye
• 2 pots (different sized – large and medium)
• Water
• Spoon
• Lid
To Decorate
• Candle Wax paint (different colors)
• Paint brushes
• Prep time: 4hrs 40mins + 8hrs
• Yields: 1 candle
• Equipment: Scissors, tray, paint brushes, hammer, 1 large pot, 1 small/medium pot, spoons, large working surface
Method:
• Begin by preparing the mold that will help form the candle.
• Take an old potato chip can, cutting it so it’s 10cm high.
• At the bottom of the can, use a thin nail and hammer to make a hole at the center.
• Take the wick and thread it through the hole. Make sure there’s enough string at the bottom of the can, and a good amount at the top, too.
• Tape the string at the bottom of the can to hold it in place.
• Plug the hole in the bottom of the can with the Blu Tack (the one with the thread running through it). That will prevent wax from leaking through.
• Tie the wick around the skewer stick so it sits at the top of the can. That will prevent the wick from getting lost in the wax.
• Your mold is ready! Set it aside and start working on melting the wax!
• Fill a large pot halfway with water, and heat until almost at a boil.
• Place the smaller pot in the hot water pot.
• Add your preferred wax into the small pot and wait for it to slowly melt.
• Cover with a lid to make it melt faster.
• Add a drop/ pinch or two of the yellow candle dye and mix. This will give it a subtle creamy color.
• Take your empty mold can and pour in the melted wax.
• BE CAREFUL! The wax is very hot!
• Fill the mold about ¾ full, and set aside for 4 hours so the wax can harden.
• You can re-melt any leftover wax in the pot.
• Cut the excess wick at the top so it’s about 2cm long.
• Then fill the rest of the mold with wax.
• Set aside to harden for at least 8 hours.
• Tip: leave it overnight and decorate the next day!
• Tear away the potato chip can mold, tack and metal base.
• And cut away the extra wick thread at the bottom of the candle.
• Use your paint brush and candle wax to paint and decorate your candle. You can make it look like Hay Day’s beautiful Floral Candle, or do your own thing!
• Light it on a cozy Autumn evening, or gift it to someone special.
Warning! To prevent fire or injury: Burn within sight. Keep away from flammable objects. Keep away from children and pets.
