Swaddling can be a highly effective technique for helping infants sleep better and longer, particularly during the early months of life. Wrapping a baby snugly in a lightweight blanket mimics the secure, cozy environment of the womb, which can soothe them and promote relaxation. One key benefit of swaddling is its ability to reduce the Moro reflex or “startle reflex”—a natural, involuntary movement that can wake a baby from sleep. By gently restraining their arms, swaddling prevents sudden movements, allowing for longer, more restful sleep.
However, it is crucial to discontinue swaddling as soon as an infant shows signs of rolling over, which typically occurs around 3 to 4 months of age. At this stage, the baby needs their arms free to push up and reposition themselves, reducing the risk of suffocation or entrapment. Transitioning to a wearable sleep sack or other safe sleepwear can help maintain comfort while ensuring safety.
