An abdominal pregnancy is an extremely rare type of ectopic pregnancy where the fertilized egg implants and grows outside the uterus, usually attaching to the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity). Although most abdominal pregnancies cannot survive due to the lack of a supportive environment like the uterus, on very rare occasions, the pregnancy can progress to a viable stage.
In these cases, the placenta, which provides nutrients and oxygen to the baby, attaches to highly vascularized areas of the peritoneum, such as the intestines, liver, or other abdominal organs. These structures can supply enough blood flow to sustain the pregnancy, compensating for the absence of a uterine lining. However, this is precarious, as the placenta is not designed to attach to these tissues, leading to significant risks of hemorrhage, organ damage, or other complications.
